Mother Nature may not necessarily be on board, but I consider yesterday’s General Membership Meeting to be the official launch of the 2014 Sky Farm season. And, if you’re like me, you are welcoming it with open arms, and anticipation of another great summer filled with sun, fun and friends.
In case you haven’t been keeping up, there are a LOT of events already scheduled, for the next few months. There are still some open Saturday nights, so if you’ve got an idea for a gathering, run it by the Social Committee, and maybe it can be added to the list of events.
We’re kicking off the season and holiday weekend with an event brought to us by the newly formed Sports Committee. The clubhouse has been spruced up in preparation for the event which will include billiards on our newly refurbished table, darts on our new dart board, and poker. If you’re looking to snag one of the limited seats at the poker table, add your name to the sign-up in the club house. Bring along your beverage of choice, and some pub food to share. It should be a great evening to meet new friends and members, and to reconnect with those we haven’t seen in a while. I know we’re looking forward to a great night!
The holiday weekend festivities continue on Saturday with the Sky Farm Appy Party, in the clubhouse, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Bring along your favorite appetizer to share (enough for 6-8 people or more), and partake in the wide array of delicacies prepared by your fellow farmers. This is a great way to top off the first day of our long weekend, and to celebrate the fact that we have a place as wonderful as Sky Farm to call our own.
Another new event this season is Movie Night. Laura and Fred are hosting the first of these gatherings on Friday, June 13th, with Blazing Saddles as the featured presentation. Weather permitting, we’ll be watching the movie outside, reminiscent of summer nights at the drive-in. Remember to bring your snacks, drinks, lap blankets if it’s a cool evening, and glass jars to capture fireflies.
There are more events scheduled, including Hollywood Night on July 5 where you can expect Sky Farm glitz and glam, as we dine and dance the night away. But, at the risk of going on too long, I’ll save that for later.
As I mentioned, above, we’ve got a new Sports Committee in place, with a bunch of energetic people looking to add some activity options to those of us who spend too much time in our lawn chairs. The miniten court is scheduled for resurfacing, and the shuffleboard court is getting a facelift. There will be a volleyball court set up on the lawn, on select weekends, as well, and a new horseshoe pit is in the works. Add to that the already popular pétanque court, and we’ve got a whole lot of ways to add a little exercise to our day, regardless of fitness level.
As the newest member of the Membership Committee, I’m really looking forward to this year’s Open House, and the opportunity to share our little slice of paradise with potential members. But, a successful open house can’t happen without the participation of everyone. If you can, please volunteer for one of the many jobs that need filling that day. And, if you can’t commit to a specific job, please be your warm, welcoming Sky Farm selves, to visitors that day (and every day).
If you’ve read this far, you may be wondering why I’ve written this to begin with. Well, the board decided that it wasn’t a new website that was needed, but rather what we really needed was more content on our existing site. So, I thought I’d give it a go… the first installment of the Sky Farm blog. This is NOT MY project… it’s EVERYONE’S project. More contributors are needed and all contributions are welcome. Pick your topic and write about whatever inspires you. It could be a review of one of our social events, or simply your thoughts on a sunny Sky Farm day.
Here’s to plenty of sunshine and good times.
